A Eulogy to Reema Lagoo

A Eulogy to Reema Lagoo

Reema Lagoo was born in the year 1958 as Gurinder Bhadbhade. Whilst still at high school, her interest in theatre became evident and like her mother, she took to the path of acting. Reema's  mother was a known actress on the Marathi Stage and continuing this tradition Reema’s daughter, Mrunmayee is also a stage and film actress.

Reema Lagoo has graced the screen in many movies such as Tu Tu Main Main to Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak , Maine Pyaar Kiya to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain . We have been a part of Reema Lagoo's acting and life journey. It appears that she has always been an integral part of 90’s Bollywood cinema. Be it of a loving mother in Vaastav or an envious one in Hum Saath Saath Hain, she has done justice to every character and made them unique. Her emotionally intense roles have made us laugh, cry, love all at the same time. She was never just an actress of the Bollywood cinema, she was part of every Sunday afternoon resting comfortably on the couch, nibbling on snacks and watching your beloved Bollywood movie with family.

Being a 90's kid, the only mothers I personally knew, except my own mother, were played by the likes of Zohra Sehgal, Reema Lagoo, Farida Jalal, Shashikala (Yes, my sister and I are Bollywood fanatics). But we all agree, that those characters, who became synonymous with their on screen names {ma, mummy, ba, dadi, biji} have reflected the real love and devotion, a woman has for her family.

Alas! Those times shall never return, but what remains is an emotional nostalgia of the golden 90’s. A chapter in cinema that seems now closed with the lamentful passing of Mrs Lagoo.
